About Us
Mission Statement:
"To advance higher education by empowering current and future students to advocate on their own behalf for the accessibility, affordability, and quality of the public institutions of higher education in the state of Michigan"
The Student Association of Michigan (SAM) was founded in 2007 by Student Government Representatives of the current member institutions.
SAM exists to serve the students of its member institutions without taking on partisan behavior. It is a primary goal of the Executive Board to continue a tradition of responsible and cooperative action on behalf of its constituents, the students of Michigan's public institutions of higher education.
Although many student-led organizations become pushed in one direction or another along the political spectrum, SAM stands determined to establish and preserve itself as an impartial organization whose only bias is towards the needs and desires of its constituents.
The goal is to provide a forum for idea-sharing and collaboration to connect Michigan's institutions of higher education, and to provide a platform for common-ground advocacy on behalf of students dealing with local or statewide issues.
The decisions to be made and the actions to take are determined by a vote of the students of member schools, and are based on the most objective assessment possible of the issues at hand.
SAM stands ready and willing to partner with organizations that share their goals, so long as the actions and goals of those organizations do not conflict with their mission statement.
SAM exists to be the voice of the students. As a unified body representing every public university in the state of Michigan, we work to make change for those unable to do so on their own.
